Apple first introduced the Dynamic Island with the iPhone 14 Pro, aiming to modernize its front display by replacing the old U-shaped notch with a capsule-style cutout. Although it brought a fresh look, the feature wasn’t universally loved. Now, fresh leaks suggest that Apple might be preparing to phase it out altogether—at least for its upcoming Pro models.
According to a tipster on Weibo, the iPhone 18 Pro and 18 Pro Max, expected in 2026, will introduce a major design shift. Instead of the Dynamic Island, Apple may use a hole-punch-style camera, much like what’s seen on Android devices. The Face ID hardware, on the other hand, could be hidden beneath the display using HIAA (Hole-in-Active-Area) technology.
The iPhone 18 Pro is rumored to feature a 6.27-inch OLED LTPO panel, while the Pro Max may get a larger 6.86-inch display—both with 1.5K resolution. These panels will only show a visible circle for the selfie camera. All Face ID components—including the flood illuminator, IR camera, and dot projector—will reportedly operate from beneath the screen.
This is a significant change from current models, where the selfie and Face ID cameras are housed together in an oblong cutout disguised by Dynamic Island animations. That visual trick will no longer be necessary, as only a single small camera hole will remain.
If this design becomes reality, Dynamic Island may become a thing of the past—at least for Pro models. Apple could still simulate a virtual "island" around the punch-hole when needed, but the need for such camouflage seems to be fading.
Meanwhile, Apple’s affordable models are also evolving. The newly launched iPhone 16e, for example, skips Dynamic Island but is the first budget iPhone to shift from Touch ID to Face ID.
As Apple continues pushing toward cleaner, more immersive displays, the iPhone 18 Pro lineup could mark a big step forward in minimalistic design.
